Nazarbayev University, School of Medicine (NUSOM), is one of Kazakhstan’s technologically most progressive universities with the leading academic and research position. Additionally, University Medical Centre serves as its collaborating hospital and the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing as its strategic partner. Currently, NUSOM has three nursing programs: a professional development program, a 2-year Bachelor in Nursing (completion), and a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing. NUSOM provides top-notch nursing programs following the European and American nursing standards.
NUSOM is the country coordinator (locally) of the recently concluded ProInCa project, highlighting the innovation and capacity building in nursing education in Kazakhstan, and continuously works as a co-coordinator of the Center of Nursing Excellence.

Massimo Pignatelli

PhD, MD, FRCPath, Dean, School of Medicine, and Vice-President for Medicine, Nazarbayev University. Dr. Pignatelli has broad experience in leadership positions both in the clinical and academic settings. Before joining NUSOM, he served as an international lead in the College of Medical, Veterinary, and Life Sciences and head of the School of Medicine, including the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing and Health Care at the University of Glasgow, School of Medicine.
Paolo Colet
Project coordinator at NUSOM
PhD, MAN, RN, RM, AFAAQHC, Assistant Professor at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. In AccelEd, Mr. Colet works as the and as a researcher in WP2.2 Strengthening Nursing Research Methodology, and in several WPs. Mr. Colet has previously worked as a key lecturer in nursing education in Saudi Arabia before joining NUSOM in 2017. His research program focuses on holistic nursing care, obstetric and gynecology, patient safety, and nursing education. He has completed his clinical fellowship about implementing evidence-based healthcare in Joanna Briggs Institute, Australia.
Nancy L. Stitt

BSN, RN, NPD-BC, Director of Nursing Education, Nazarbayev University, School of Medicine. Ms. Stitt comes to Nazarbayev University with robust international education, leadership, and nursing professional development experiences through the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). She began her teaching career as the first Liver Transplant ICU Nurse Educator at UPMC in 1987 and progressed to the role of Advanced Clinical Education Specialist. She is considered a leader in the field of transplant nursing education and is responsible for co-founding and launching the International Transplant Nurses Society (ITNS) in 1992 where she has served on the Board of Directors as President and President Emeritus in 1992-1994 and 2014-2017. She is board-certified as a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner.
Alma Syzdykova
MSc, MBA, MD, Director of Science and Education Department at the University Medical Center
In AccelEd, Dr. Syzdykova works as a researcher in WP2.2 Strengthening Nursing Research Methodology, and in several developmental WPs. She also represents the University Medical Centre, the collaborating hospital of the project with NUSOM. Dr. Syzdykova has experience in coordinating the development of human resources in health care. She has worked in public service at the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan and coordinated medical staff training, including nursing specialists.
Joseph Almazan
Researcher in WP2.2
DNSc, MPM, MAN, RN, Assistant Professor at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. In AccelEd, Mr. Almazan works as a researcher in WP2.2 Strengthening Nursing Research Methodology, and in several WPs. Before joining NUSOM in 2019, Mr. Almazan has worked as an assistant professor in nursing education in Saudi Arabia. He has participated in various international research presentations, served as a keynote speaker, and a reviewer for several journals, and publishes in ISI journals. His research interest is within nursing education and practice and in gerontology.
Anargul Kuntuganova
Researcher in WP2.2
MBA, Instructor at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. Before joining the NUSOM, worked in University Medical Center in many fields (Risk Management, Quality Management, and Patient Safety, Strategic Planning, Marketing, and Public Relations, International Cooperation). Before UMC, Ms. Kuntuganova was teaching at Kazakhstan School of Public Health as Senior Lecturer. Her research interests are health policy, health economics, economic evaluation, risk, and quality management.
